ABSTRACT

Traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda, Unani, Greek, Arabic and Chinese have relied on the use of plants as a whole or their parts for the treatment or prevention of various diseases. The use of herbal drugs is also increasing in the modern era due to ineffectiveness or adverse effects associated with the use of conventional drugs. The usage of plant derived preparations is as high as 25% even in developed countries. Many herbal products have been advocated and promoted to be used as food supplements. Their efficacy has been demonstrated in both preclinical and clinical studies in different disease conditions. However, their use has been shown to result in numerous pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions with other co–ingested drugs and food items. Some of these preparations can also produce their own toxic effects and because of this, their use is required to be discontinued. The drug interactions, toxicities and aspects related to the safe use of common herbal health foods like ginger, garlic, turmeric, green tea, aloe vera, ginseng, ginkgo and other plants are described in this review.
